Kindy teacher
friends have directed my attention to NZ’s Early Childhood Educational
Curriculum
resources published last year, which stress the significance of
quality / authentic/ genuine adult and child conversation. The “serve and return” or Talking Together dialogue
between the adult and child is of paramount importance in the child’s oral
development and actually right across the educational spectrum. I hope the
conversation in this book will inspire caregivers to consider, how we might
listen better, and be more intentional in our chats using extended vocab and
interesting ideas. I am having a priceless time reading this conversation to
children in Auckland’s libraries and especially loving the spontaneous
conversational interaction.
One girl – “I
saw giraffes at the Zoo but they didn’t say anything to me. They were just
quiet.”
One boy-
“…what about their chewing noises?
